Farwell voters to consider school improvements

FARWELL — Voters in Farwell are going to the polls to consider $9.4 million worth of improvements to school district facilities.

The election is scheduled May 5.

The ballot will include two separate bond questions:

• Proposition A, which would provide $6.15 million for construction and renovation to the high school, junior high, elementary school, roof replacements and a heating/air conditioning replacement and other projects;

• Proposition B, which would provide $3.23 million to construct a new vocational ag building and other projects.

Superintendent Colby Waldrop said if both propositions pass, property taxes would increase by $0.392 per $100 valuation ($0.257 for Proposition A and $0.135 for Proposition B).

School district tax on a $100,000 home would go up $32.67 per month, or $392 per year, according to a brochure distributed by the district.

The brochure also points out projects may be completed in any order and “are subject to change as District needs are assessed and refined.”

Waldrop said he does not know of any organized opposition to the bonds.

“Most comments have been positive,” he said. “Obviously not everybody is going to be happy, but most feedback has been positive.”

Waldrop said there aren’t any other funding possibilities the school district could explore if the propositions don’t pass.

Early voting begins Monday and will run through May 1 at Farwell’s school administration building, 705 Sixth St., from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. (CDT).

Voting on election day, May 5, will take place from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. (CDT) at the Farwell Community Center, 201 Ninth St.
