PORTALES — Be a little better today than you were yesterday.
The Portales High tennis teams took that to heart Tuesday, with their second battle in just four days with district-rival New Mexico Military Institute.
On the home courts of the Bill Wahlman Tennis Center, both the girls and boys squads were just a little bit better than they were before, with the girls claiming a 9-0 win and the boys falling 8-1.
When the two faced off in a district round-robin Saturday in Roswell, the Portales girls won 7-2 — losing two matches by default after the final score was determined — and the boys fell 9-0.
The girls got some challenges from NMMI, as Zamorye Cox could likely attest. The Portales senior and No. 2 singles player rallied from a 7-5 opening set loss to Morgan Lynch to take the final two sets 6-3, 6-4. That was after she and Sarah Blaeser went three sets with Lynch and Eliana Ward. Each team took a set via tiebreaker in the 6-7 (4-7), 7-6 (7-4), 6-2 Portales win.
On the boys side, Julian Tellez and Tyler Underhill teamed up for Portales' only win, taking No. 3 doubles in three sets.
Portales is back in action April 27 in the next round of the 1A-4A District 3-4 tournament.
