CLOVIS — Round-abouts can be tricky even in the best of conditions.
Add in impaired driving at dark, and you might have a situation like Thursday night when someone drove a pickup truck over the stone barrier at the center of the round-about at Norris Street and East Llano Estacado Boulevard.
Clovis police responded around 10:15 p.m. to a report of a pickup truck crashing into the island there, with “half of the vehicle on the grass part of the round-about and the back end of the vehicle on the curb,” according to a criminal complaint.
The driver told officers “he was going, and ran up on the road,” and later stated “he did not wish to take any test, and that he just wants to go to jail because he was drinking and driving.”
“I mean you guys already know I’m drunk,” the officer wrote of the statement from the man, who was charged with aggravated driving under the influence, possession of synthetic cannabinoid and no insurance.
The man was jailed Thursday and released Friday on personal recognizance, pending a court date next month.
No injuries were reported.
The stone wall around the center grass of the roundabout island took most of the damage, with several bricks dislodged and two vertical cracks in the mortar.
