Serving Clovis, Portales and the Surrounding Communities
CLOVIS — The Clovis Municipal Schools Board of Education will honor high-achieving students and faculty members at tonight's meeting. Members of the middle and high school bands and choirs will be on hand following strong showing at the state competitions held recently
On April 13, the Clovis High Women's Select Choir finished second and the CHS Chamber Choir finished fourth at the State Choir Contest; last week, the Gattis, CHS and Yucca Symphony Bands picked up first-, second- and third-place awards, respectively, at the State Concert Band Contest.
The board will also hear a presentation about the CHS Family, Career and Community Leaders of America program, which won 11 awards including a state championship at the State Leadership Conference in March. The program's advisor Amy Garcia was also recently selected as the 2018 teacher of the year by the New Mexico Association for Career and Technical Education.
The district's volunteer of the year will also be revealed tonight.
Other items on the agenda for the 5:30 p.m. meeting at the administration building at 1009 Main St. include:
• The board will vote on salaries for the 2018-19 school year. Assistant Superintendent of Finance Shawna Russell said the salary schedule includes Public Education Department-mandated raises, which give all teachers an additional $2,000 plus a 2.5 percent raise. Russell said all other employees received a 2 percent raise.
• The board will vote on a resolution regarding the procurement of services by board member Paul Cordova's company Cielco LLC. Similar resolutions are voted on any time a board member is associated with a company that provides services to the district.
Superintendent Jody Balch said Cordova has been providing free disc jockey services to the district and the resolution will allow Cordova to become a vendor and receive payment for his services. Cordova must abstain from voting on the resolution and the awarding of any contracts for DJ services for which his company applies.
• The board will discuss the district's food procurement policy and changes initiated following a June 2017 audit that included 10 findings. Russell said all of the items have been corrected and the policy was in its first year of implementation at the time of the audit.
• The board will vote on a revised instructional calendar for the 2018-19 school year and discuss the instructional calendar for the 2019-20 school year. Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources Kerry Parker said the board still needs to pick a date for graduation in 2019, which it will do tonight.
• The board will vote on a travel proposal for the Air Force Junior ROTC program to attend the Regional Search and Rescue Competition in Aurora, Colorado, from June 1 to June 3.
• Marshall Middle School Principal Todd Morris will provide an update on the school.
