Serving Clovis, Portales and the Surrounding Communities

Reporter's notebook: Drop off your drugs

Have any unused/unwanted medications lying around? You can take care of that on Saturday, according to the New Mexico Behavioral Health Services Division.

The initiative encourages citizens to return their unused prescriptions to drop-off locations across the state, and continues to “build on our efforts to fight prescription drug abuse and overdose fatalities,” Gov. Susana Martinez said in an NMBHSD press release.

The “Drug Take Back Day” is part of a national effort “to remove opioids and other medicines from homes so they will not be abused or stolen,” according to the press release.

While there are no official drop-off sites in Portales or Clovis, medications can be taken to the South Plains Rural Health Services parking lot in Levelland, Texas, and the Walgreens parking lot in Hobbs, according to the U.S. Department of Justice Diversion Control Division’s website.

The event will last from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
