1973: As Beef Appreciation Week came to a close, members of Clovis' Cattle Capital CowBelles were registering shoppers and entering their names in a drawing for 70 $10 beef certificates, which could be redeemed at 11 local supermarkets participating in the promotion.
Other activities for the weekend included tours of local stockyards, feed lots, and beef-packing facilities, and live cattle displays at the Hilltop Plaza shopping center and Safeway. A number of out-of-state tourists passing through Clovis also received certificates good for free steak dinners at local restaurants.
The promotion, spearheaded by the CowBelles, came in the midst of a nationwide call to boycott beef because of high prices.
1958: Ten oil wells were producing in south Roosevelt County in an oil field first tapped in October 1956 with a discovery well called Magnolia's Jacobs Federal number one.
That first well produced more than 210 barrels per day.
Lario Oil and Gas had moved three rigs into the area in the past week.
The Clovis News-Journal reported that the latest discovery — in the southern quarter of section 14 — was flowing at an estimated rate of 10-15 barrels per hour.
A tank battery - a series of tanks built to receive crude oil — was under construction in the area.
