Former ENMU president among honored
PORTALES — Former Eastern New Mexico University president Steven Gamble is among the faculty being honored at the college’s Distinguished Faculty Emeriti Awards on Monday.
The awards will be given at ENMU’s annual Emeritus Faculty Luncheon at noon in the Zia Room of the Campus Union Building.
In his 16 years at ENMU, Gamble “reversed an eight-year decline in enrollment and initiated a 16-year period of growth of 67 percent from 3,583 students in 2001, to more than 6,000 in 2017,” according to a press release from the university.
Another former president, Floyd Golden, will be receiving a posthumous award for his service.
The press release noted that Golden’s presidency from 1941 to 1960, known as “the golden years,” “saw the school develop from a two-year institution with ... 145 students, into a fully accredited university of almost 3,000.”
Other award recipients include former faculty members Donald Averill, Kathleen Donalson-Tayler, Barbara Palantone and Jeanie Wozencraft-Ornellas.
