Reporter's notebook: Surnames you know

If you live in New Mexico, you probably know somebody with the last name of Martinez, Garcia or Chavez, at least according to Ancestry.com.

The genealogy website released the most common surnames by state, with a trio of Hispanic names topping the list in the Land of Enchantment.

Texas sported nearly the same list as New Mexico, with Garcia, Smith and Martinez making up the state’s top three.

Smith was far and away the most common surname in the country as there were only five states — including New Mexico — that did not have the last name among their top three.
