RICHARDSON, Texas — Danee Bustos got a little bit of hardware entering the Lone Star Conference track championship. The Eastern New Mexico junior was chosen as the LSC's female track athlete of the week.
The award is the first of Bustos' career. She was credited with her work on the Greyhounds' 400 relay team, which finished with a team-record 45.96 at the weekend's Oliver Jackson Twilight meet at Abilene Christian University.
Bustos runs the second leg of the relay team, which now stands at fourth place among Division II teams.
She was also one of three ENMU athletes named to the LSC's academic team.
The Greyhounds are in Angelo State today to begin the three-day LSC meet.
Three Hounds make academic teams — Three Eastern New Mexico track athletes received spots on the Lone Star Conference academic team, according to a Wednesday release from the conference.
Senior Coley Norcross and Danee Bustos represented the ENMU women, while Ezra Bagwell was the lone men's selection for the Greyhounds.
In all, the conference recognized 22 athletes — 11 male, 11 female — from eight member schools.
Angelo State had six selections, including Kami Norton repeating as women's academic player of the year. West Texas A&M's Owen Hind took the men's honor; he was also selected for the honor during the indoor season.
Norcross and Bagwell were both selected for the second-consecutive year.
To be eligible, student-athletes must carry at least a 3.30 grade point average and have reached sophomore status both athletically and academically. The Academic Player of Year award and All-Academic Team are selected from the list of academically qualified players, with the league's sports information directors voting based on both academic and athletic achievement.
