1993: The Clovis Junior Women's Club adopted the Hillcrest Zoo for a two-year Community Improvement Project (CIP).

Lisa Harrison, CIP chair for the group, listed several goals for the project, including increasing public awareness of the zoo and its support organization, the Clovis Animal Rehabilitator and Education Services (CARES), increasing membership in CARES, and supporting landscaping for a proposed otter exhibit.

The group had already sponsored a logo contest, which was won by Michael del Toro, a 26-year-old graphics arts student at Clovis Community College, who came up with a design featuring an outline of the state of New Mexico overlaid with a Zia sun symbol and a stylized lizard.

1958: Teachers in Clovis, Grady, Melrose and Texico were expecting raises of up to $900 each after approval of a budget for the upcoming school year.

New teachers with a bachelor's of science degree and no previous experience were promised a salary of $4,300 per year for the first two years, a $500 increase. By the third year, those teachers could earn $4,450, followed by incremental increases through the first 12 years to a top salary of $5,400, unless the teacher obtained a master's degree or completed 36 hours of graduate work.

A teacher with a master's of science degree and no experience was slated to start at $4,700 per year for the first two years, and then receive incremental increases through the 12th year before capping out at $5,900.
