1988: Play Incorporated was in its first full day as the new lease holder of Clovis' YMCA facility after gaining the property through a revised lease agreement approved by the Clovis city commission.

The Clovis News-Journal reported that Play Inc. board members had expressed concern over the condition of the building, so City Attorney Dave Richards met with them to work out revisions in the lease.

The city agreed to inspect the facility and make any necessary repairs, the article said.

"The children in the city are going to gain and the city will gain," Commissioner Robert Moreno said. "No one is going to lose."

1968: "Sparkling female voices" were back on telephone lines, according to the Clovis News-Journal, after an 18-day strike by the New Mexico employees of Mountain States Telephone Company. Mountain States had joined in a nationwide strike by operators holding out for higher wages and benefits.

According to the article, "weary supervisory personnel, most of them men, were elated over the settlement."

A male operator who had been filling in for the striking women was described as "gruff-voiced" and quoted as saying, "I'm delighted to get off this long distance telephone work, I tell you. It's been a long, long time."
