Portales to consider $50,000 payment

PORTALES — The Portales City Council will be asked to approve a payment of $50,000 to the city’s economic development center at its meeting tonight, officials said.

If approved, the funds — which come from the city’s local economic development tax — would go to the Roosevelt County Community Development Corp., which will administer the funds for the purpose of economic development, according to City Manager Sammy Standefer.

Standefer will also give a report to the council on the city’s ability to use bonds to improve infrastructure.

He said he will present a letter from the city’s financial advisor Rob Burpo that explains its bonding capacity.

“Basically I’m just gonna be giving them a report as to ‘you could bond on property tax up to so much money, you could bond on gross receipts tax up to so much money, you can do this for so much money,’” he said.

Also at today’s meeting at 6:30 p.m. at the Memorial Building:

• The council will hear recommendations for appointments to the city’s public safety committee and lodger’s tax advisory board.

• Councilors will consider approval of a $141,068 bid by Albuquerque-based J&H Services, Inc. for the repair of Seventh Street between South Dallas Avenue and South Elgin Avenue.
