1973: Lt. Dan Combs, a firearms instructor for the Oklahoma State Highway Patrol, was the featured speaker for a joint meeting of all of the Clovis civic clubs hosted by the Clovis Kiwanis Club at the Curry County Mounted Patrol Arena.
Combs held "several hundred civic club members and their guests spellbound," according to the Clovis News-Journal.
Combs' presentation included a firearms display in which he emptied a full 50-round magazine from a Thompson machine gun into a single playing card.
Combs was billed as "one of the foremost gun handlers in the United States," the News-Journal reported.
1973: The Unites States Air Force was looking for a few good dogs, according to a press release from Cannon Air Force Base.
The canine recruits were being offered "training, modern kennels, personal attention, and meaningful work," the press release said.
The Air Force was hoping to recruit 100 German Shepherds immediately, and 1,300 more during the 1974 fiscal year.
Potential candidates had to be between 1 and 3 years old, weigh at least 60 pounds, and stand 23 inches tall at the shoulder.
