American flags will be flown at half-staff on Tuesday as a tribute to law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty, according to a press release from the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund.
Known as “Peace Officers Memorial Day,” the national day of remembrance for fallen police officers is held every year on May 15.
According to timeanddate.com, the idea for the day was introduced in 1961 and signed into law by President John F. Kennedy in 1962.
Then in 1994, according to the press release, Congress and President Bill Clinton approved a law requiring that flags be lowered to half-staff every year on May 15.
