RIO RANCHO — Wednesday was a tough day for local teams in the NMAA Class 1A/2A baseball tournament at Rio Rancho High School, as both Melrose and Floyd got knocked out in the quarterfinal round.
The No. 3 Buffaloes (15-5) saw their three-peat bid fall short with a 3-0 loss to No. 6 Jemez Valley, 3-0, while the No. 8 Broncos lost to No. 1 Mesilla Valley, 15-5 in five innings.
Melrose allowed two runs in the fifth inning to fall behind, 3-0, while stranding the bases loaded in the bottom of the inning, squandering its best opportunity to get back into the game.
Floyd (9-10), meanwhile, fell behind quickly, as the Broncos found themselves down 6-2 in the fourth, and things only spiraled from there.
Dora, the seventh seed, also fell in the late game, 7-2 to second-seeded Mora. No other information was available.
