1988: House High School's Kathleen Petrak was one of seven New Mexico students selected as a student ambassador in Initiative for Understanding: The American-Soviet Youth Exchange.
New Mexico Gov. Garrey Carruthers announced that Petrak and six other students from the Land of Enchantment would be traveling with a teacher from the Truth or Consequences school district, joining student delegates from other states, and leaving the United States on July 7.
The three-week tour was to include stops in Moscow, Sochi, Odessa, Kiev, Leningrad, and Helsinki.
1983: More than 250 paintings by local artists including Linda Childers, Genevae Williams, and Ginnie Seifert had been hung at the Triangle Home Center for the Sixth Annual Spring Fine Arts Show sponsored by the Pintores Art League of Clovis.
Members told the Clovis News-Journal it was one of the best shows in recent memory.
The show was to be open to the public for several days, and featured a "public opinion" award to be presented in memory of Dean Merritt.
"Merritt is remembered by many artists as one of the first and best art teachers in Clovis," the article said, noting that several of the exhibitors were his former students.
