Beer, wine coming to corporate, private events at ENMU

Eastern New Mexico University's food services provider will soon be able to provide beer and wine at corporate and private events on campus.

At a May 11 meeting at the ENMU-Roswell Campus, the university's board of regents unanimously approved the acquisition of a governmental beer and wine license for Sodexo, according to Coordinator of Media Relations Desiree Cooper.

The contract with Sodexo will allow for beer and wine to be served at private and corporate events at buildings including the Campus Union Building, University Theatre Center and Golden Student Success Center.

In a Thursday press release from Cooper, Chancellor of the ENMU System Jeff Elwell said a number of community members previously wanted to hold events on campus "but were unwilling to do so due to the lack of access to adult beverages."

The decision includes Greyhound Arena and Greyhound Stadium, but the university does not plan to allow alcohol sales during ENMU athletic events.

Also at the May 11 meeting:

• Regents approved the addition of a minimum ACT score to its admission standards for incoming students.

The standards, requested by Vice President of Academic Affairs Jamie Laurenz, now require an ACT score of 17 or a 2.5 GPA with an ACT score of 14, whereas students were previously only required to have a score of 17 or a 2.5 GPA, according to Cooper.

• Elwell's title of system president was changed by the regents to chancellor of the system and president of the main campus.

Cooper said that it is common for the individual that oversees multi-college systems to have the title of chancellor.

"In this situation, it makes more sense to have it as a chancellor because it's the more common terminology, versus before, it wasn't as clear, I guess. It's not as encompassing, even though the job duties are the same, to my knowledge," she said.

• Regents approved each campus' five-year capital plan.
