1988: American consumption of lamb had risen slightly but still lagged considerably behind other types of meat.
The United States Department of Agriculture said Americans were expected to eat about 1.4 pounds of lamb per person during 1988, up from 1.3 pounds the year before, according to an Associated Press article.
“But,” the article warned, “don’t trade in for a sheep ranch just yet.”
The 1988 per capita consumption of beef was expected to tip the retail scale at 72.1 pounds per person, followed by pork at 62.7 pounds, and veal at 1.5 pounds.
Chicken was the most popular meat, with an average per capita consumption of 82.9 pounds.
1978: Everett Frost was named dean of Eastern New Mexico University’s Academic Affairs and Graduate Studies, and Gordon Thomas was named dean of ENMU’s College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, following a nationwide search.
Both were already at ENMU, and expected to resume the new positions on July 1.
Frost was an associate professor of anthropology and had been assistant dean for the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences since 1976.
Thomas had been interim dean for the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences for the 1977-78 academic year, and had been at ENMU since 1959 in science education.
