Serving Clovis, Portales and the Surrounding Communities
CLOVIS — For the third time in five seasons, the Clovis High softball program is looking for a new coach.
Clovis Athletic Director Dale Fullerton confirmed Brandi Thomas turned in her resignation Tuesday. She leaves Clovis as its career wins leader at 103 and made the state softball tournament twice.
The two most recent seasons were the toughest they've ever been, however, with 2-24 records in both the 2017 and 2018 seasons.
Thomas was two years into her second stint as softball coach, and served in the position for 10 years previously. A call placed to Thomas Tuesday was not immediately returned.
Fullerton ends his tenure as athletic director Friday, and said the replacement process would be left to successor Lonnie Baca and CHS Principal Jay Brady.
"The last time we opened it up, we didn't have any applicants (outside of Thomas)," Fullerton said. "It will need to be a search that really reaches out. I'm sure there's someone around.
"You don't like to get a contract coach, but sometimes that's how it works out. A teacher-coach position is what you want ... somebody who's around the kids during the day at school is always good. They know what's going on in the kids' lives and they can interact with them."
Thomas graduated from Clovis in 1994, before the Wildcat softball program came into existence. However, she did play three seasons at Eastern New Mexico University, and recorded the first run and hit in program history.
