PORTALES — A few days after arriving back into New Mexico from Charlotte and the NCAA Division II meet, the Eastern New Mexico University track teams were awarded seven All-American awards between six athletes.
Sophomore Marcus Parker led the way by placing second in the 200 and third in the 100 to grab a pair of first-team honors.
First-team honors also went to the 400 women's relay team of Lateria Slaughter, Danee Bustos, Maijah Mathis, and Kandice Miles. The team made school history, both by making the final race and finishing in 45.78 seconds to finish eighth.
Senior Kenneth Lloyd picked up second-team honors with his 10th-place finish in high jump.
Bustos was also named to the College Sports Information Directos of America's academic all-district track/cross country team, along with Ezra Bagwell. Students are selected from a pool of candidates with at least a cumulative 3.30 grade point average and enrollment at the current school for at least two semesters.
DeLaCruz honored again — ENMU second baseman Alex DeLaCruz was named an honorable mention All-American by the Division II Collegiate Commissioners Association.
The D2CCA also selected DeLaCruz to the South Central Region first team - one of three regional awards DeLaCruz received.
The senior led the Lone Star Conference in batting average (.380) for the second-consecutive season. He also ranked second in the league in hits (70), third in stolen bases (26) and in the top 10 in most offensive categories.
His .410 average is the program's second highest career batting average ever, trailing only ENMU Hall of honors inductee Shane Shallenberger, and is second only to Jereme Johnson in stolen base percentage, with a .868 success rate.
Men's hoops adds Shaw — Andre Shaw, who worked with Eastern New Mexico men's basketball coach Tres Segler at Midwestern State, was recently added by Segler as the Greyhounds' newest assistant coach for the 2018-19 campaign.
Shaw and Segler coached together from 2013-16 under Nelson Haggerty as assistants at MSU, helping the Mustangs to a 2016 Lone Star Conference Tournament title along the way.
Shaw is best known for his recruiting abilities as well as his prowess to connect with student athletes on a personal level. Segler will lean on Shaw for these skills as well as scouting LSC opponents throughout the season.
Shaw started his coaching career under former University of Pittsburgh coach Jerry McCullough at The MacDuffie School in Granby, Massachusetts, while completing his undergraduate degree in communications.
Sha's playing career included three seasons at Western New England University, a Division III school where he averaged 17 points per game. The Harlem native graduated from the Vermont Academy in 2008 before playing one season at Essex County in Newark, New Jersey. His father, LeRoy, netted 1,759 points as a standout for Midwestern State from 1972-76.
