1988: Water was cascading over the spillway at Lake Clovis in Ned Houk Park following heavy weekend rains.

The dam creating Lake Clovis was built in 1975 by the Soil Conservation Service, and intended to prevent flooding in Plainview, according to the Clovis News-Journal.

Funds had not been procured to seal the bottom of the lake, but Ash Grandy, director of parks and recreation, said "short of spending $500,000, the lake will eventually acquire enough silt from runoff" to hold water naturally.

"Proponents of the lake hope it could someday be an alternative to Lake Sumner or Lake Conchas," the article said.

1983: Clovis High School student Sharla Sheriff was elected governor of the 36th annual Girls' State during the week-long program at the New Mexico School of Mining and Technology in Socorro.

Sheriff, 17, was one of 320 young women from around the state participating in the program. All had recently completed their junior year of high school.

U.S. Sen. Pete Domenici, R-New Mexico, was the keynote speaker.

"As you look ahead to the future, I hope that now and then you will take the time to ponder the meaning of patriotism," he said. "We are all in this together, equally powerless and powerful."
