1953: A well-trained 5-year-old roping horse named "Chigger" was killed and another roping horse was injured when fire destroyed their barn on Clovis' East Brady Avenue.

Four goats also died in the blaze, and firefighters said tools, three saddles and a ton of hay were destroyed.

Owner O.D. Stevenson Jr. said he estimated losses at $1,500. The second horse, "Ginger," was under the care of a veterinarian.

The fire was discovered about 10 a.m. Two fire trucks responded, but efforts to extinguish it were hampered by lack of any nearby water hydrant, Fire Chief George Maddox said.

The cause of the fire was unknown. The horses had been fed about 7 a.m. and left unattended until the fire was reported.
