Members selected for revenue review committee

CLOVIS - The Clovis city commission selected members for the city's 2018 Revenue Review Committee during a 35-minute meeting on Thursday.

The committee is tasked with reviewing the city's fees for various services and consists of one commissioner and one citizen from each district.

The commission first selected its own members for the committee, choosing Mayor Pro Tem Juan Garza for District 1, Commissioner Gary Elliott for District 2, Commissioner Helen Casaus for District 3 and Commissioner Chris Bryant for District 4.

Before voting on community members to serve on the committee, Commissioner Fidel Madrid motioned to table selections of residents until the next meeting due to receiving a limited number of applications - none for District 1, one for District 2 and two for Districts 3 and 4 - but the motion did not receive a second.

The citizen selections were Kevin Spears for District 2, Nick Mondragon for District 3 and Mike McDaniel for District 4. District 1 was tabled due to not receiving any applications.

Spears is the court executive officer at the Curry County courthouse, Mondragon is an administrative assistant at the Clovis/Curry County Chamber of Commerce and McDaniel owns McDaniel's Flooring.

McDaniel was selected by a 5-3 vote while Spears and Mondragon were chosen unanimously.

McDaniel received votes from Garza and Commissioners Elliott, Ladona Clayton, Rube Render and Chris Bryant and Justin Hummer received votes from Commissioners Casaus, Madrid and Sandra Taylor-Sawyer.

Also at Thursday's meeting (all votes 8-0):

• The commission approved a six-month option agreement for a 645-acre property west of Cannon Air Force Base. Mayor David Lansford called the land "an interesting opportunity for Cannon Air Force Base and the city of Clovis."

After the meeting Lansford said there are number of reasons for the city to purchase the land including forest preservation, water conservation - as that would be 465 acres of land that would not be irrigated, opportunities for Cannon expansion and potentially industrial value, which Lansford said will be evaluated during the six-month option period.

• As part of the consent agenda, reserved for routine items not expected to spark debate among the commission, nine items were approved including an $8,000 grant from the state department of tourism for the city's trash pickups and yard of the month program, a request from the Clovis Police Department to host National Night Out on Aug. 7 at Greene Acres Park, a contract with Cut It Right for $119,877 to trim trees at Hillcrest Park, changes to the Commission on Older Adults and a request to close the 1300 block of Broadway from 2 p.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday for a block party.

• Commissioners took no action following an executive session to discuss land acquisition.
