1968: An 8-year-old Clovis boy suffered a fractured skull and was in critical condition after falling out the back of a pickup near his home on West Street.

Dennis Meas, who lived at 520 West, fell out of the pickup between the 400 and 500 blocks of West, officials said. He was rushed to Clovis Memorial Hospital and then transferred to Lubbock Methodist Hospital where he was admitted to the intensive care unit.

Dennis remained in critical condition the next three days before his condition was upgraded to fair, the Clovis News-Journal reported.

State law today prohibits anyone under 18 from riding in cargo areas of pickups.
