1953: Two Portales boys had gone public with their search for reliable transportation.
Unable to afford horses, Tommy Felber and Kenneth Harris, both 12, had gone to the Portales newspaper seeking to get the word out: They wanted to buy a donkey or burro.
The boys told newspaper Editor Gordon Greaves they could pay up to $6 for such a beast.
"Greaves noted with some nostalgia that he remembers the day when you could buy a donkey for 50 cents," The Associated Press reported.
