1953: Clovis Police Chief Ollie Damron was patrolling the Texico highway in search of ... tourists.

Damron, along with Clovis Mayor O.G. Potter and Chamber of Commerce President Stanley Pawol, were participating in a "Guest of the Week" program.

"(A) car will be stopped and asked destination, starting point, and if occupants are bona fide tourists, will be invited to be guests of Clovis overnight," the Clovis News-Journal reported.

Guests were scheduled to receive a free room at the La Contenta motel, and free meals at Longchamps restaurant.

Bryant's Real Service had agreed to service the guest automobiles at no charge, and Clovis Floral Co. was providing flowers.

The State and Sunshine theaters were also providing free passes to their shows.

The guests were scheduled to be selected each Friday afternoon through the summer.
