1965: Heavy rains had pounded the region in recent days.

The Otho Smith farm in Quay County recorded 5 inches of moisture the past two days, the Tucumcari Daily News reported.

Conchas Lake levels had climbed almost a quarter-foot in 24 hours, to an elevation of 4,201 feet.

1957: Clovis native Kay Green, 16, was crowned the 1957 National High School Rodeo Queen.

It was her first national title and followed her winning the State High School Rodeo Queen title in Santa Rosa the previous week.

She competed against 300 contestants from 15 states.

1955: A front-page photo in The Portales Valley News showed a cat nursing two kittens along with three baby skunks.

The cat belonged to Emory Ferguson who lived near Portales.

The skunks came from an alfalfa field where their mother had drowned.

That’s entertainment ...

Ringside tickets were $3.

A matter of faith ...

1968: A message from Pope Paul VI — instructing Catholics to reject birth control pills and any other type of artificial birth control — was “merely an opinion and not a doctrine,” a church spokesman said.

Fred Mc Caffrey, public relations director for the Archdiocese of Santa Fe, said, “Catholics do not hold that the Pope’s opinions are not infallable in an encyclical.”

Mc Caffrey said individual priests would still determine how to advise persons in reference to use of birth-control methods, United Press International reported.

The Pope had called use of artificial birth control “intrinsically wrong” in a papal encyclical letter called “Humanae Vitae,” or “Of Human Life.”
