Serving Clovis, Portales and the Surrounding Communities

Volleyball tourney successful

CLOVIS — More than 20 co-ed volleyball teams competed in Saturday's eighth annual Sand Volleyball Tournament at Hillcrest Park, trying to raise money for a good cause.

The tournament is a fundraiser put on by the Clovis Volleyball Booster Club, to help raise money for Clovis' high school volleyball team.

"It's $120 a team, and there are 21 teams this year," the event's co-organizer Tisha Brothers said.

On average, the fundraiser attracts about 20 teams a year, meaning this year was right on par with the previous seven Sand Volleyball Tournaments.

Between the entry fee, as well as money raised at the concession stands, the boosters expect to raise roughly between $2,500-3,000 this year. As for the formation of the event, it's been going on as long as the boosters have been around.

"Myself and a couple other people started the booster club back then," Brothers said. "We have a league, so it's just kind of an extension of that."

The league, which is part of the Clovis Volleyball Association, is also part of the fundraiser.

Ages of the entrants is wide-ranging, as it's been anywhere between 10 and 60 years old over the years. However, the majority of participants are typically teenagers or in their 20s.

"It's a 4-on-4 co-ed (tournament), and you have to have two guys on the court," Brothers explained. "You don't have to have two guys, but you can't have anymore than two."

4 Play in the Sand wound up winnning the tournament. Block Party captured second place.
