1973: The Memorial Hospital board of directors took "a definite step" toward "a new hospital or expansion and remodeling of the present facility," the Clovis News-Journal reported.

Board members, led by President Bill Bonem, discussed ways to finance a hospital that could hold up to 150 beds.

They also discussed whether they wanted to continue with a publicly owned hospital or consider a privately operated facility.

Dr. Alan Haynes told the board support from local doctors would go to whoever "builds the plant and allows an input by doctors into the hospital and its operations."

Memorial Hospital had been built in 1939. It closed in 1978, transferring 34 patients to the new Plains Regional Medical Center, which opened with 106 beds.
