Portales girls drop opener to Valencia

ROSWELL — Although Ruben Tellez’ Portales girls soccer team didn’t get a win in its season-opener, he nonetheless was pleased with what he saw. The Rams fell on Friday afternoon to Valencia, 3-0, in the Roswell Tournament in the season debut for both teams.

Portales is trying to replace 12 seniors, and have just two seniors on this year’s team.

“The girls played hard today, but had a lot of nerves,” Tellez explained. “But, they played well, so I can’t complain.”

Valencia’s first goal was on a Portales miscommunication, according to Tellez. However, the Rams trailed by just that one goal inside of the final 15 minutes of the match.

But, a Portales own goal, coupled with another goal allowed in the 73rd minute, quickly changed the Rams’ fortunes.

The Rams will now play two games today — one morning and one afternoon — to close out the tournament. Portales will face former district rival Ruidoso at 9 a.m., and then will play either a consolation match at noon, or a championship match at 1:30. Possible opponents for that match are yet to be determined.

“Ruidoso lost a lot of seniors,” Tellez said. “They play five back on defense, so we’re gonna have to move the ball well.”
