AUSTIN, Texas — It took the Eastern New Mexico volleyball team a little bit of time to get going on Friday morning, but they eventually built enough momentum to grab their first win of the season.
The Greyhounds, for the third time this season, forced a fifth set after trailing 0-2. But this time, Eastern finished things off strong and topped Purdue Northwest 18-25, 24-26, 25-17, 26-24, 15-4.
Sophomore Jasmine Gannon had 16 kills and three blocks to lead the Greyhounds, who took another five-game set against Colorado State-Pueblo in the afternoon — 25-22, 16-25, 25-21, 22-25, 15-11.
Against Purdue Northwest: Rae Sipaga served the Greyhounds through a 10-0 third-set run that pretty much ended things, with two service aces during.
Against CSU-Pueblo: Gannon had 17 kills, while Jennifer Martinez posted seven kills and five blocks.
The Greyhounds put things on ice in the fifth with a 6-0 burst, with Kaitlyn Kluna serving the last five. Eastern put away the win with a kill by Sarah Tuioti-Mariner — her 11th kill of the match and her 24th of the day.
The Greyhounds will close out the tournament with a 9 a.m. matchup with St. Edward’s, then return home to prepare for a three-game homestand to open Lone Star Conference play. The Greyhounds’ home debut is 5 p.m. Friday against Midwestern State.
