Serving Clovis, Portales and the Surrounding Communities

She prizes her shoes, of course

My name is D'Nieka Hartsfield. I was born and raised in Clovis. I graduated from Clovis High in 2000. I participated in the AFJROTC and CHS band. I studied journalism and business at ENMU Portales. The highlight of my summers growing up was playing softball and attending our annual family reunion in east Texas. My mother is Ethel Mae Perkins, who also grew up in Clovis and father, Freddie Perkins, who is a Vietnam vet, was born in Louisiana and retired at Cannon AFB. I'm a wife and mother of three. I enjoy traveling and spending time with family and playing dress-up whenever I get the chance.

What is your most prized possession?

I guess I could say my shoes. I love shoes and accessories. I'll buy a pair of earrings and shoes whenever I get the chance - even if I don't get to wear them often. My best fashion advice has always been to build your outfit from your shoes.

Tell us about a time you cried.

What first comes to mind was when my last son was born. I had a high-risk pregnancy that landed me in ICU so when I was wheeled down to hold him for the first time after 24 hours I cried uncontrollably.

What's your idea of a perfect day?

Anytime I can just chill and choose what I want to do all day is a perfect day. That means no work, no scheduled anything. I'll cook, have some wine, go for a swim and watch reality TV. I need to laugh until my abdomen hurts also.

What is your theme song?

I don't have one. But I'll always enjoy listening to a Mariah Carey or an Al Green album.

If you could have a super power, what would it be and why?

To not only be called one but to actually 'know it all' on the spot, anytime, whenever needed.

When you were a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?

I wanted to go on Star Search (with Ed NcMahon), sing and become a superstar. Today, I tend to be a recluse so that probably wouldn't have worked out.

What does your garden grow?

I plant pots of flowers. That's as close to a garden as it gets.

Favorite quote?

"Never let a problem to be solved become more important than the person to be loved." - Barbara Johnson

If money were no object, what would you do to make eastern New Mexico a better place?

I'd invest in a whole lot of entertainment and fun for all ages and I'd start with a huge amusement park. Plus, our roads would have truck routes.

What do you hope your life will be like in 10 years?

Same lifestyle. Less work. More travel.
