GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. — The Eastern New Mexico men’s soccer team came just a few minutes from a stunning upset and a program first Thursday night.
But less than 10 minutes after they were defending a 1-0 lead, the Greyhounds were sent away with a 2-1 overtime loss to No. 21 Colorado Mesa in the first of two road games in Colorado this weekend.
The Greyhounds (2-1), who were seeking their first 3-0 start in the 15-year history of the program, came just a few minutes away from getting it via upset when Aderi Arthur-Dede converted a penalty kick with about 37 minutes left.
It looked like the goal might stand for Eastern, until the final five minutes when Kevin Del Mazo found James McGhee for the equalizer.
Just over four minutes into the first of two potential sudden death overtime periods, Chris Boyd converted for the Mavericks (1-0-1) to end it.
The Mavericks outshot Eastern 19-5 overall, including a 7-2 advantage on goal. The Greyhounds’ only other shot on goal came in the first half, courtesy of Arthur-Dede.
Lance Miears made five saves for the Greyhounds, who head to Durango to play Fort Lewis in a 1 p.m. Saturday tilt. They begin the Heartland Conference season Thursday at Texas Permian Basin.
