Prep cross country: Portales boys finish ninth at Lovington

LOVINGTON — Portales’ cross country team competed Thursday at the Lovington Invitational, and made strides even as the boy’s varsity finished ninth out of nine teams.

Santa Teresa cruised to the meet win with 27 points, including the second, third and fourth finishers. Hagerman’s Martin Flores was medalist at 15:32.

Portales was led by Damian Jacobo, who was 32nd at 18:55. He was followed by Jesus Jaquez (20:25, 52nd), Austin Perez (22;31, 55th), Adam Sickles (21:40, 58th) and Tate Bradfute (22:45, 66th).

“Right now, we’re just building the culture of what’s expected, how to run and train,” Portales coach Micahel Aunon said. “I’m happy with the effort I’ve seen. Everybody’s been out there competing really well. Each race, and I know we’ve only had two, but each runner has (set a personal record) by a few minutes. That’s all I’m really expecting. They’re competing with just not the field, but themselves.”

Karleah Hulett (27:04, 20th) and Codi Flores (29:46, 29th) ran in the JV girls race. Brandon Guerrero won the JV boys race at 17:42, and was followed by Cody Webster (21:34, 26th), Trace Cain (21:52, 31st), Roger Simental (21:58, 33rd) and Noah Heidlebaugh (28:18, 45th).

Portales runs again next Saturday at the NMMI Invitational.
