ENMU women post first victory

Hounds prevail 2-1 vs. Adams State

ALAMOSA, Colo. — Eastern New Mexico University’s womens soccer team peppered Adams State with shots all Sunday, and got rewarded in the form of its first victory of the season.

Victoria Nunez and Anahi Hernandez both netted their first collegiate goals, and the Greyhounds left Alamosa with a 2-1 victory heading into a four-game homestand.

Eastern (1-1-1) had 28 shots on the day, with 10 of them on goal against Corri Zaiger.

Zaiger was mostly up to the task, making eight saves, but she was finally bested early in the second half when Nunez beat her on a long shot from 40 yards out to the high right.

The Grizzlies needed just six minutes to notch the equalizer, as Kendall Weld got a header inside the box and put it in the top right corner past Taylor Jackson.

The Greyhounds took the lead for good in the 72nd minute, when Hernandez went right side from just inside the box to beat Zaiger.

Morgan Zuniga and Julia Tucker each had assists on the game winner, and the Grizzlies only managed one shot that went wide right over the final 20 minutes.

Jackson got the win in goal, with four saves for the Greyhounds.

The Greyhounds are back in action Thursday with a 7 p.m. matchup against East Central at Greyhound Stadium. They’ll host Southern Nazarene in a noon Saturday affair before starting their 12-game Lone Star Conference schedule the following week.
