Fiesta de Familias set for tonight in Portales

PORTALES — Free food, music and games are coming to Lindsey Park in Portales tonight for the annual Fiesta de Familias.

Organizer Pilar Moreno said when event was originally created 27 years ago, there were a lot of shootings on the north side of town, so organizers wanted to give people a chance to come to the park without any fear of violence.

Now she said the event is mainly just a way for the community to come together and experience a fun day in the park.

“I love to see the kids play on the playground and having fun and the parents don’t have to worry about paying for a meal; it makes our day,” Moreno said.

In addition to the free meal, Moreno said there will be piñatas and performances of Mexican, Chicano and oldies music.

Moreno said the event is also a way for members of the Portales community to come together and see their friends and neighbors while celebrating the residents’ Hispanic heritage.

The Fiesta de Familias will run from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Residents are encouraged to bring their own chair.

Moreno said the event is made possible by donations and volunteers from the community, as well as support from the Portales Cultural Affairs Committee.
