PORTALES — Sometimes its better to be lucky than good. The Eastern New Mexico women’s soccer team was a little of each on Friday night.
The Greyhounds started off the Lone Star Conference season right, getting an own goal midway through the first half and an insurance tally from Kaitlyn Caro in the 81st minute for a 2-0 victory over Texas A&M-Commerce in the LSC opener for both teams at Greyhound Stadium.
The women continue the LSC season on Sunday at home with a noon contest against Texas Woman’s.
The teams both took nine shots on the evening, with Eastern registering four on goal and the Lions three. Texas A&M-Commerce had seven corner kicks to ENMU’s four, but the Greyhounds had the one that counted the most — a Naomi Abeyta kick that ricocheted and somehow got past Caitlin Duty and found the back of the net in the 25th minute.
Taylor Jackson played the whole game in goal, making three saves for the shutout. Morgan Zuniga led ENMU with four shots.
