Hounds named conference's players of the week on offense, defense.
RICHARDSON, Texas — Following a 3-0 week, Eastern New Mexico University’s volleyball team was recognized with a pair of Lone Star Conference weekly honors, as seniors Jennifer Martinez and Alba Ontiveros took the offensive and defensive player awards, respectively.
The winning streak has put the Greyhounds (7-8, 5-3 LSC) in sole possession of fourth place in the LSC standings. The top eight teams in the 11-team field qualify for the postseason tournament, hosted by the No. 1 seed.
Martinez, a middle blocker from Lynnwood, Washington, was consistent with 30 overall kills — nine against West Texas A&M and a career-high 11 against both Western New Mexico and Texas-Permian Basin. She also added 15 blocks.
Ontiveros, a libero from Las Cruces, helped the Greyhounds hold their opposition to a .055 hitting percentage over the week. She totaled 54 digs in three matches, including 25 in a five-set win over WT.
This is the first week any ENMU player has received a weekly LSC award.
Eastern last had two players awarded in the same week in the 2016 season, when Lauren Frye took the offensive player of the week and Andrea Aguilar took the defensive award in Week 6.
The Greyhounds only had one weekly award winner in the 2017 season. as Aguilar took Week 5 defensive honors.
Tarleton State’s Blanca Izquierdo was honored as setter of the week.
The Greyhounds travel to San Antonio Friday to face St. Mary’s, then resume their LSC season Saturday at Texas A&M-Kingsville.
