Rotich wins LSC award for second straight week

RICHARDSON, Texas — For the second-straight week, Eastern New Mexico University senior Mercy Rotich has been named the Lone Star Conference’s female cross country runner of the week.

Rotich received the honor from the league office following last weekend’s Arkansas Chile Pepper Festival, where she broke her own school record by 27 seconds — crossing the finish line in 17:37.7. Rotich finished 12th overall in the competition, and was the top women’s runner among all Division II competitors.

Rotich had set the school record the week before, finishing second in the Texas Tech Open at 18:04.7.

Rotich, who redshirted in 2017, only ran one regular season race in 2016 — finishing second at the West Texas A&M Buffalo Stampede — before placing second in the LSC championships, first in the South Central Regional championship and sixth overall in the Division II nationals.

She is the sixth Greyhound athlete this week to receive an LSC weekly award. She joins Dante Urrea of the football team, Kaitlyn Kluna and Alba Ontiveros of the volleyball team and Kaitlyn Caro and Taylor Jackson of the women’s soccer team.

The ENMU cross country teams are back in action today in Hobbs for the New Mexico Junior College Invite.
