Rotich takes third, ENMU women take fourth

Greyhound men seventh at New Mexico Junior College Invite

HOBBS — Senior Mercy Rotich finished third Friday, helping the Eastern New Mexico women’s cross country team nab a fourth-place finish Friday at the New Mexico Junior College Invite.

The Greyhound women finished fourth in team competition, while the men were seventh overall in the 7K race.

Rotich crossed the finish line in 18:25.77, behind Everlyn Kemboi (17:43.42) of team champ El Paso Community College and Gladys Jemaiyo (18:03.75) of South Plains.

Jemaiyo’s finish helped South Plains edge ENMU for third place, 90-91. El Paso Community College cruised to the team win with 28 points versus Lubbock Christian’s 55, thanks to all five of their scoring runners finishing in the top nine.

Other ENMU women’s times were Evaline Cheptoo (13th, 20:07.23), Mason Swanson (25th, 21:19.5), Sierra Quinones (33rd, 21:47.23), Abby Kepfer (36th, 22:05.81) and Caroline Bachman (59th, 23:44.43).

In the men’s event, Andrew Bosquez helped South Plains take the team victory with his first-place time of 21:35.39. He had three teammates finish 5-6-7 to help edge El Paso Community College, with had the 2-3-4 finishers.

Shane Walsh led the Greyhounds with at 23:00.8 for 17th place. He was followed by Garrett Meyer (33rd, 24:11.46), Lorenzo Juarez (39th, 24:26.4), Shane Rinde (40th, 24:26.75), Louis Bolander (49th, 25:10.05) and Adren Soto (62nd, 25:49.89).

The Greyhounds have their next two meets in Canyon, and they’ve got plenty of time to prepare. They’ll head to Canyon Oct. 20 for the Lone Star Conference preview meet, and then two weeks later return for the LSC championship.
