Roosevelt to hear tax sunset request

PORTALES — The Roosevelt County Commission will hear a request from Roosevelt General Hospital Chief Executive Officer Kaye Green at Tuesday’s meeting to extend the sunset of the local hospital gross receipts tax.

The tax is set to sunset on July 1, 2037, and by extending that deadline by 10 more years, RGH would be able to pursue 20- or 25-year financing to pay for a new emergency department and expanded operating rooms, Green said during the Sept. 24 RGH board meeting where the recommendation was unanimously approved.

At Tuesday’s meeting the commission will vote on the consideration of an ordinance to amend the sunset date. The ordinance to enact the amendment to the tax will come before the commission at a future meeting if the consideration item is approved on Tuesday.

Also at Tuesday’s meeting, scheduled for 9 a.m. in the county commission room at the Roosevelt County Courthouse, the commission will vote on five contracts that include road contract renewals and an agreement with the Roosevelt County Community Development Corporation to continue managing the county-owned Enterprise Center.

The meeting will be followed by an executive session to discuss court cases and the purchase, acquisition or disposal of real property or water rights, according to the agenda.
