The Eastern New Mexico News snared three individual first-place awards and finished second in the National Newspaper Association’s 2018 General Excellence competition for daily newspapers.
The annual awards ceremony was held Saturday in Norfolk, Virginia.
The News finished second to the Sioux City (Iowa) Journal in the daily division for General Excellence, the top prize.
Former News photographer Tony Bullocks won first place for best use of photographs and breaking news photos.
Editor David Stevens won first place for breaking news story.
The individual awards all were related to coverage of the deadly shooting at the Clovis-Carver Public Library in August 2017.
The Taos News won the General Excellence award in the non-daily division for papers with circulation between 6,000 and 9,999.
More than 1,400 entries were submitted for the NNA’s Better Newspaper Editorial Contest, according to an NNA news release.
Established in 1885, the National Newspaper Association is one of the largest newspaper associations in the country.
