16 named Golden Apple finalists

ALBUQUERQUE — Sixteen New Mexico teachers have been named finalists for the 2019 Golden Apple Award, including three from Clovis.

Clovis finalists are:

• Shelly Grim, Arts Academy at Bella Vista

• Christi Hartley, Arts Academy at Bella Vista

• Roxanne Mitchell, Sandia Elementary School

In all, 16 teachers from five communities were named finalists by the Golden Apple Foundation, which “honors outstanding teachers for their exceptional work in helping students learn, think, and create,” according to its news release.

“Recipients of the award receive several benefits, including ... a generous professional development fund, and a cash prize.”

Seven winners will be named in November, following site visits from a selection committee.

EPCOG to discuss property sales

CLOVIS — The Eastern Plains Council of Governments Board of Directors will discuss an update on the sale of properties during Wednesday’s meeting, scheduled for 10 a.m. at the EPCOG office, 418 N Main.

In October 2017 the board approved the sale of three low-income housing complexes and at the board’s February meeting Executive Director Sandy Chancey said that EPCOG was moving forward with the sale of the Ruth Visage Apartments to J.L. Gray Co. to be finalized in April.

The agenda for Wednesday’s meeting also includes reports on EPCOG programs, approval of Chancey’s travel to the Ports to Plains Conference in Del Rio, Texas, from Oct. 30 to Nov. 1 and changes to the personnel policy regarding holidays and leave, travel and purchasing procedure.

County receives vegetation chipper

CLOVIS — Curry County recently received a new mobile vegetation chipper, according to a county press release.

The $45,595 chipper was purchased with funds from the 2018 Wildfire Risk Reduction Program and will be used to reduce materials which lead to wildfires, the release said.
