PORTALES - Lovington pitched a second-half shutout, and found more than enough offense in the second half Thursday for a 3-1 victory over Portales in the District 4-4A opener for both teams.
Anaee Reyes scored the equalizer less than six minutes into the second half for Lovington (4-9, 1-0). Sofia Corral followed with the go-ahead tally in the 49th minute and America Hernandez added the insurance in the 63rd minute.
Rebekah Christensen had the lone tally in the sixth minute for the Rams (6-6, 0-1), who dropped back to .500 with the defeat.
Christensen led Portales with five shots on the day.
"We came out great the first half, and we panicked in the second half," Portales coach Ruben Tellez said. "We missed key opportunities, and they took advantage of mistakes we made."
Portales continues its 4-4A schedule Tuesday at Artesia.
