Man faces more than 21 years in shooting

CLOVIS — A man convicted last week in Clovis of shooting a woman in the head last summer faces more than 21 years in prison, according to a news release from the 9th Judicial District Attorney.

Joshua Martinez, 34, was convicted of aggravated battery on a household member, a third-degree felony, among other charges, following a jury trial Wednesday in Curry County.

The charges stemmed from June 16, 2017, when a woman reported to Clovis police that “she had been shot in the head;” she had surgery and “eventually recovered,” while Martinez “fled the scene and was apprehended a short time later.”

He faces up to 21 1/2 years in prison, including an eight-year enhancement for prior felonies. He also awaits trial “on another domestic violence case” from May 2017, said the release.

Judge Drew Tatum presided over the one-day trial, prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Kristen Beltran and defended by Sandra Gallagher.
