1931: The “Skyscraper of the Plains” had opened its doors in the 200 block of Main Street in Clovis.

Hotel Clovis featured 114 guest rooms — each with a telephone, bathroom and hot/cold running water — above a drugstore, barber shop, beauty parlor and tailor shop across 60,000 square feet.

Eastern New Mexico’s newest landmark was nine stories and 105 feet tall.

Promoters said it was the tallest building between Albuquerque and Dallas.

It closed in 1984, but reopened in 2013 as a 59-unit apartment complex.
