Clovis, Carlsbad and Hobbs all have shot at 4-5A title
CLOVIS — The Clovis girls had a chance to wrap up the District 4-5A title Saturday with a win over Hobbs. The Eagles had other plans, and now the district title depends on Tuesday night.
Hobbs’ 1-0 victory, coupled with Carlsbad’s 9-0 win Saturday over Roswell, puts the Wildcats, Eagles and Cavegirls all with a shot at the title.
“Everything is going to hinge on what happens with Hobbs and Carlsbad,” Clovis coach Traci Sievers said. “That’s presuming we can beat Roswell (Tuesday). We have to show up.”
The New Mexico Activities Association settles district ties first by head-to-head records among tied teams, then by goal differential (capped at five to minimize the impact of blowouts), then by goal differential in all district games (again capped at five), then by fewest goals allowed in district play, then coin flip.
In the three games so far between the teams, Clovis is 2-1-1, Hobbs is 1-1-1 and Carlsbad is 0-1-2. The Wildcats and Eagles each took 1-0 road wins over each other. Clovis went 1-0-1 against Carlsbad with a 1-0 win and a scoreless tie. The Eagles and Cavegirls played to a scoreless tie already this season.
Here are the scenarios for Clovis:
• Clovis wins Tuesday at Roswell: The Wildcats win the district with either a Carlsbad win or tie. A Hobbs win would lead to a tiebreaker that would be settled either by overall district goal differential (Hobbs is currently plus-6, and Clovis is plus-5) or fewest goals allowed (both Clovis and Hobbs are at 1).
• Clovis loses at Roswell: Hobbs takes the district with either a win or a tie, and Carlsbad claims the district with a win.
• Clovis ties at Roswell: Clovis would win district via head-to-head tiebreaker if Carlsbad wins. Hobbs would win the district outright with a win or via tiebreaker if it ties Carlsbad.
