RICHARDSON, Texas — The Eastern New Mexico football team brought a little bit more than the Wagon Wheel home this weekend.
The team found out Monday it also has the Lone Star Conference’s defensive player of the week. Sophomore linebacker Noah Sweitzer took the honor, according to a release from the LSC office.
Sweitzer was a linchpin in the Greyhound defense that posted its first shutout of West Texas A&M since 1992. He had 10 tackles, six of them solo and 2.5 for a loss. He also forced and recovered a fumble in the fourth.
The Greyhounds (3-5, 3-3 LSC) allowed 134 yards and eight first downs and kept a shutout despite three Buffalo drives starting in ENMU territory.
The victory was the sixth in seven Wagon Wheel games, and puts the Greyhounds in the series lead at 17-16.
Sweitzer is the second Greyhound to win an LSC weekly defensive honor this season, and the third player overall. Dante Urrea was honored as top defensive player Sept. 24, and Tyler Vargas won the special teams honor Oct. 1.
The Greyhounds are home Saturday to take on Texas Permian Basin, with kickoff set for 7 p.m.
