ENMU volleyball pulls split for week

PORTALES — Eastern New Mexico University’s volleyball team heads into this week still not completely sure if it will finish the week with one of the Lone Star Conference’s eight tournament spots.

However, the Greyhounds will be able to enter this week coming off of a win, which has eluded them during a late-season rough patch.

The Greyhounds rallied from a one-set deficit twice Friday at Greyhound Arena, defeating Texas A&M-Kingsville 23-25, 25-18, 20-25, 25-23, 15-11.

That victory helped offset a 25-23, 22-25, 25-23, 20-25, 11-15 loss to Western New Mexico on Tuesday. Following its loss Saturday to Texas Woman’s, the Mustangs (9-17, 5-12) will likely have to run the table in their three matches this week to grab a playoff berth.

Tarleton State (26-2, 18-0) has already clinched the top spot, and will host November’s LSC tournament. No other seed is locked in, and the bottom four teams — Texas Woman’s, Texas A&M-Kingsville, Texas-Permian Basin and ENMU — are all separated by two games or less.

The Greyhounds, who had lost nine of their last 10 before Friday’s triumph, will at least have the homecourt advantage to close out the season. They’ll host Texas A&M-Commerce 6 p.m. Friday and Texas Woman’s noon Saturday.

Against Western: Jennifer Martinez posted a double-double with 16 kills and 10 blocks, while Kaitlyn Kluna had 31 assists and Rae Sapiga 27. Jasmine Gannon had 15 kills, while Christelle Kialanda had 11 kills and four blocks.

Against Kingsville: Gannon led the way with 15 kills and added a pair of blocks. Kluna had 26 assists and 13 digs. Rae Sapiga had 18 assists and three aces.
