Who's the best-dressed guy or ghoul?

Superheroes top pick for Halloween costumes this year

CLOVIS — If the thousands of costumed kids who attended Boo in the Zoo at the Hillcrest Park Zoo on Sunday are any indication, eastern New Mexico residents will likely see a lot of superheroes in town today for Halloween.

Spider-Man seemed to be the most popular character, with dozens sporting the red and blue of the classic Marvel superhero, though Batman and Captain America were also well-represented.

Atlas Schlau, 7, said he likes Spider-Man "because he's amazing," fitting given the character is featured in the comic book series "The Amazing Spider-Man."

It's not surprising the web-slinging superhero was a popular choice on Sunday. According to Google's Frightgeist, a compilation of the search engine's most popular costume trends for this year, Spider-Man ranked No. 2 in the nation, trailing only the popular video game Fortnite.

While Fortnite costumes topped Google's Frightgeist, it did not seem to be a popular outfit at Boo in the Zoo. But speaking of video games, 9-year-old Geovanni Alvarado was dressed as a character from his favorite video game Halo, which he said he enjoys because "all of the cool guns."

Another popular choice on Sunday was "The Incredibles," brought back to the mainstream by "The Incredibles 2," which premiered in June, 14 years after the original animated film was released.

Erick Curtis, who along with his wife Ashley and their four foster children was dressed as an Incredible, thought the costume was a fitting representation of their family.

"I think it's incredible what these kids have overcome," Curtis said.

Liz Villanes and her 5-year-old granddaughter Nicole Martinez were also dressed as characters from the movie because they do good.

"My granddaughter says 'Let's go fight crime,'" Villanes said.

Miley Roybal's costume came from a more classic cartoon, "The Flintstones." Miley, 1, was dressed as the baby Pebbles, complete with a car like you would see Fred Flintstone driving.

Sabrina Acosta said her father made the real-life Flintstones' car and that last year he built the carriage from Cinderella to go with Miley's costume.

Annastacia Booth and James Gibson had two of the scariest costumes, dressed as zombies. Booth said they did so because she wanted to give special effects makeup a try and zombies would be a good start.
